TRIP OVERVIEW

Tsechu is a Buddhist religious festival celebrated in various parts of the Himalayan regions. This is a sacred dance festival which is also called “festival of 10 th day” in Nepal. Tsechu festival is celebrated to honour Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and his eight manifestations. This festival features masked dances and various types of historical and spiritual performances by Buddhist monks.

The Tsechu is held annually on the 10th day of second lunar month of Tibetan calendar.

The heart of the festival is the sacred cham dances, which are a form of Buddhist ritualistic performance with deep symbolic meaning. Dating back to the 9th century when Guru Padmasambhava introduced Buddhism to Tibet, the dances have been practiced through the ages by experiences of great Tibetan spiritual masters. The dances teach Buddhists stories. Every mask, costume, movement, and gesture has a specific spiritual and artistic meaning. Dances include Invocation, Black Hat, Red Mask, Gings, Pacham, clowns and historical dance celebrating the coming of Buddhism to Tibet.

In Kathamndu Tsechu dances are performed in the courtyard of Shechen Monastery, Boudha. The full day of sacred dances is presented every year at the end of an intense 6 week period of drupchens (long ceremonies). Tsechu in Kathmandu takes place just one day before the Paro Tsechu in Bhutan. The festival draws a large number of attendees, both from the monastic community and the public. The presence of honorable Mathew Ricard, Sechen Rabjam Rinpoche and other high ranking Buddhist Lamas makes the celebration more glorious.
